    Overnight Ride

Note: You must register in advance.  Registration closes at noon on Monday before the ride to allow for last minute logistics and communications. There is no day-of-event registration.  You must be a member of RUSA and PCH Randonneurs to register. There will be a 30 rider limit on this ride.

This is a point-to-point ride that PCH Randos last did in 2018. The ride begins in San Luis Obispo and travels south, mostly along the coast, to San Juan Capistrano. The planned overnight stop is at the Jones' house in Moorpark, where riders will be able to sleep and eat some hot food. A drop bag will be transported from the start to the overnight control, and then on to the finish.

The start is at the Motel 6 South in SLO. Riders are responsible for booking their own motel rooms and there are many hotel choices nearby. It is smart to do this well in advance- SLO hotels tend to be in high demand on spring weekends. The finish will be at the Best Western in San Juan Capistrano. There are train stations with riding distance of both the start and finish hotels.

Riders can take the Amtrak to San Luis Obispo on the Friday before the ride.  There are two Pacific Surfliner trains per day that allow you to wheel your bike in and store in a special bike area.  The bike is free, but you must add a bicycle reservation to your ticket and there is a limit to the number of bikes on one train.  The Coast Starlight also allows bikes, but for this train you wheel your bike to the baggage car and the conductor will load it into a bike area.  Another option to get to the start is to join with some friends and use a one-way rental car; AVIS does not charge an extra fee for one-way drop-off!

Full lights and reflective gear are required.  Please see Article 10 of the RUSA Rules for Riders.

This is a minimally supported ride.  In general, riders are responsible for finding their own food and water on course, although there may be roving support.  There will be food provided at the finish and the overnight.  There will be a limited amount of SAG, so riders should have a plan to find their own way back if they need to abandon.

For the over night control a variety of beds and air mattresses will be provided. Riders should plan to include a bed roll or sleeping bag with their small drop-bag. Drop bag and bed roll will be transported to Over night and final controls.

For those of you who would like the RWGPS split into two days, here are the files:   Day 1 (to overnight):   https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46651847          Day 2:   https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46651877

This is a nice 100k that includes one of the best cycling roads in Southern California, Glendora Mountain Road.  There is about 5,000 feet of total ascent, but the gentle, steady gradients and terrific views will take your mind off the hard work.

The ride begins in Pasadena, follows the usual surface streets to GMR, then climbs up to the high point (3300 ft) at the Caltrans Maintenance Shed.  From there you will descend down the backside of GMR to the East Fork Road and ride along the San Gabriel river.  There is a control at the Camp Williams Cafe (which may or may not be open), after which you will head over to Highway 39 to decend out of the mountains and head back to Pasadena.

There will be no SAG support for this ride.  Riders should carry enough food to get through the ride.  There are places to fill up water on the route.

The Lazy Acres 100K Populaire is a scenic out and back coastal route from the west end of Ventura to Lazy Acres Market in Santa Barbara. The first 13 and last 13 miles of the route is on Old PCH on the shoreline. In Carpinteria, there is a rolly jaunt along the foothills then on to Summerland, Montecito and up Cabrillo Blvd in Santa Barbara. If you missed anything on the way up, you can resee most of it on the return. The course, barring coastal fog, has views of the Channel Islands off the coast of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. The coast is usually very mild, with lows in the 50’s, and highs in the 70’s.

Note:  You must register in advance for this ride- registration closes at noon on Friday before the ride.  There is no late registration or day-of-event registration.  You must be a member of both PCH Randonneurs and RUSA in order to register.

Description: This course is as flat as it gets for an out and back from Moorpark to Santa Barbara Harbor and back to Moorpark.

The initial climb out of Moorpark will help warm the system up for the 8 mile gentle descent down Santa Rosa Road to Camarillo. The route crosses the Oxnard Plain to the coast and at Harbor Blvd. turns north to Ventura. You will then travel Route 1 or Old PCH and the new coastal bike path to Carpinteria. Carpinteria, a busy beach town only 12 miles from SB Harbor, is a great stop for coffee or late breakfast. The route then using surface streets, parallels the 101 Freeway to Summerland and over the Ortega Hill bike path to Montecito. Then navigate the roundabout to Santa Barbara’s majestic and popular Cabrillo Blvd, so keep your eyes alert to the road as it’s easy to be distracted. Sushi Go-Go and On the Alley are good places for bite to eat while looking over the Santa Barbara Harbor with your bike in view as well. The Harbor Market is steps away for those that want to grab and go for a quick turnaround.

Missed something on the way out? You get a chance to see all of it again on the way home, usually with a good tailwind.

This is an unsupported ride.  Riders will need to obtain their own food and water out on the course.  There is no SAG.

This is a super flat ride along the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel River Trails.  The ride begins in Arcadia and uses mostly bath trails to get to Seal Beach, where you can enjoy a nice coffee and pastry break.  The route then retraces the same bike trails back to Arcadia.  At the finish you can enjoy lunch at Goldstein's Bagel Bakery (where they make genuine boiled NY style bagels) or at the nearby In-N-Out.

Do not park in the Goldstein's lot- it is small and you will be towed.  There is street parking available on La Porte and Flower streets near the start.  The start is also very close to the Arcadia Gold Line station if you would prefer to take Metro.

This is an unsupported ride.  Riders will need to obtain their own food and water out on the course.  There is no SAG.

This ride is part of our Rouleur Award series.   To earn the Rouleur Award riders must do rides of 100km, 125km, 150km, 200k, plus a Dart Populaire in the same calendar year.  PCH Randos will have more Rouleur-targeted rides in the summer and fall.   More about the Rouleur award.

Ride Description- Come join us for the 7th SoCal Winter Solstice Ride.   Get out your thermal tights, decorate your bike with holiday lights, and join a group of other crazies riding through the longest night of the year.    The route is a mostly flat, point-to-point ride from Pasadena to Oceanside.  We start with a little loop of South Pasadena and La Canada, then head over to the San Gabriel River Trail.  The River Trail takes us all the way to Seal Beach, then we'll follow the coastal route to Oceanside.  The start and finish are both at train stations with parking, so it is fairly easy to handle the logistics.

Although the ride is not technically an audax-style ride, riding with others is strongly encouraged, especially on the SGRT at night.  In keeping with the holiday spirit, you are invited to enjoy a midnight meal together at the Harbor House Cafe in Sunset Beach, about 67 miles into the ride.  One of the best things about this ride is seeing all the Christmas lights as we ride through the towns.  You are encouraged to decorate your bike too- you'll be tickled at the positive reactions this elicits from car drivers and pedestrians.

Parking- There is overnight parking available at the Sierra Madre Villa Station and at the Oceanside Station.  If you live in the LA area, you can drive to the SMV Station, or better yet take the A Line train there.  After you finish in Oceanside on Sunday morning, you can take the train (either Amtrak or Metrolink) to Union Station, and then the A Line back to SMV Station.  If you live in the San Diego area, you can park at the Oceanside Station and take the train to the start.

This is an unsupported ride.  Riders will need to obtain their own food and water out on the course.  There is no SAG.
