This is a super flat ride along the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel River Trails.  The ride begins in Arcadia and uses mostly bath trails to get to Seal Beach, where you can enjoy a nice coffee and pastry break.  The route then retraces the same bike trails back to Arcadia.  At the finish you can enjoy lunch at In-N-Out Burger.

You can take the Metro A-line train to the start.  If you are driving, you can park at the station.  There is also street parking available nearby on St Joseph and Rolyn Streets.

This is an unsupported ride.  Riders will need to obtain their own food and water out on the course.  There is no SAG.

    Overnight Ride
    Social Gathering Before/After

Note: You must register in advance.  Registration closes at noon on Thursday before the ride - there is no day-of-event registration.  You must be a member of RUSA and PCH Randonneurs to register.

The ride starts by climbing up to San Francisquito Pass in the Sierra Pelona Mountains, and then takes Lake Hughes Road down to the Castaic Junction. Lake Hughes Road does bring you down to Castaic, but there are steep climbs along the way.  In exchange, there are great views of Castaic Lake and of  interesting rock formations along the way.

The route then follows Hwy 126 through the Heritage Valley to Santa Paula where it turns and heads up to Ojai. Hwy 150 was closed due to a mudslide, but there is now a walking path past the slide. The climb up to Ojai is moderate, and is followed by a long, fast descent to the Denison Grade where there is a spectacular view of the Ojai Valley and the Topa Topa Mountains.

From Ojai the route goes past Lake Casitas  and over the familiar double bump (with more spectacular views of the lake) and then follows the inland route past Carpenteria to Montecito (where you can stop for lunch or a snack at the ever-popular Pierre Lafond market.)

It then heads to the coast for a flat ride down to and through Oxnard and across the Oxnard plain, then past the Naval Air Station to pick up PCH again. After a beautiful (possibly sunset) ride along the coast (keep an eye out for dolphins), the route turns inland and climbs Encinal Canyon Road to Hwy 23 and down into the San Fernando Valley. There will be a staffed control at a viewpoint on Encinal Canyon Road.

Following the foothills surrounding the valley, the route heads up through Newhall Pass and back to Santa Clarita. The route will end at the ride leader's house where there will be food, and a place to nap if needed.

This is a fairly challenging route, mainly due to the climbing at the beginning and the end. Fortunately, most of the climbing should come before and after the mid-day heat. There are services along most of the route, but be sure to carry enough water, particularly for the Lake Hughes Road portion of the ride. There is water available at a hose bib outside the Green Valley Market (as well as in the market itself) on the climb to San Francisquito pass, and on PCH at Sycamore Cove Beach before Encinal Canyon Road.

Parking is available at the start in Bridgeport Park, and along Bridgeport Lane in front of the park. The bathrooms in the park may not be open at the start time, but there is a Starbucks not far away at the corner of Newhall Ranch Road and Bouquet Canyon Road.

Full lights and reflective gear are required.  Please see Article 10 of the RUSA Rules for Riders.

This is a minimally supported ride.  Riders are responsible for finding their own food and water on course.  Food will be provided at the finish.  There is no SAG vehicle.

    Red Box Picnic Area
    7V5V+9W Altadena
    California, CA

At intersection of Mt Wilson Red Box Rd and Angeles Crest Highway.  About 14 miles up Hwy 2 from La Canada.

    Registration is not open

    Overnight Ride

Registration is on hold for now because of multiple closures on Highway 2.  If Hwy 2 doesn't open, we won't hold the ride.

Note:  You must register in advance for this ride- registration closes at noon on Thursday before the ride.  There is no late registration or day-of-event registration. You must be a member of both RUSA and PCH Randonneurs to register.

Join us for a moonlit summer ride in the San Gabriel Mountains.  This Populaire begins at Red Box (where the Mt Wilson Rd meets the Angeles Crest Highway) and climbs to Dawson Saddle, the highest point on the Angeles Crest Highway at 7900 ft.  The return to Red Box is much easier- mostly descent with only a few climbing sections.  This is a challenging ride because of all the climbing, but the gradients are very reasonable- nothing too steep.  And there are no stop signs or traffic lights to slow you down.  Easiest navigation ever- just one U-turn!

On this night the moon is close to being a full moon-  It should be high in the sky for most of our ride.  In August the night temperatures, even at elevation, won't be too cold.  I hope traffic will be light because most of the hikers and sports car drivers should have gone home already.

The ride is free, but all vehicles will need an Adventure Pass to park at the start location.  If you have a National Parks lifetime senior pass, that works too.

Full lights and reflective gear are required.  Please see Article 10 of the RUSA Rules for Riders.  There will be an inspection at the start.

This is an unsupported ride- there is no SAG vehicle.  Water will be stashed somewhere along the Crest so you can fill up on the climb to Dawson.  Riders will need to carry enough food for the entire ride.

    Social Gathering Before/After

Note: Advance registration is required for this event.  All members of the dart team must register individually.  The team captain also needs to submit your team's route for approval to Kerin at least one week in advance of the event.

A Dart Populaire is a team event in which a team of 3-5 bicycles rides together for 8 hours, covering at least 120 km on a route of their own design.  Even though all the teams begin in different locations and ride unique routes, they all finish in the same spot at about the same time.  This year we will finish at the Jones' Home in Moorpark, where we can enjoy wood-fired pizza and drinks together on their lovely patio.  Hopefully, we will be celebrating the successful completion of the Rouleur Award for many riders.   Team events are a lot of fun, and the Dart Populaire has the advantage of only being 8 hours long.  So find some rando friends and get a team together.

The target finish time is 17:00, which means the teams will begin their journeys at 09:00 on Sunday morning.

You can read more about the Dart populaire here.  I know that all the rules can be confusing, so please feel free to contact Kerin about any questions or help with route design.  Also if you are looking to form a team, or looking to join a team, I would be happy to facilitate.  My goal is to have as many people as possible enjoy this event.  I also have built up a library of previously-used routes if you are interested in using one of those for your team.

The Dart Populaire is part of our Rouleur Series.  To earn the Rouleur Award you need to do populaires with lengths of 100k (actually anything from 100-124k), 125k (actually 125-149k), and 150k (actually 150-199k); plus a 200k brevet and a Dart populaire.  If you finish all these rides in 2024, PCH Randos will present you with this spiffy patch from RUSA:

This is a Populaire that starts in Ventura and does a counterclockwise loop through the Ojai Valley.  The "Double Bump" in the name refers to Highway 150 and Casitas Pass, both of which are beautiful climbs- especially in the winter and spring when everything is green.  The final third of the ride is mostly along the coast.

The start is at Simone's Coffee and Tea.  The finish is right next door at Two Trees Restaurant where we can enjoy a beer and some food.

This is a minimally supported ride.  Riders are expected to be self-sufficient and obtain their own food and water out on the course (there are several parks and markets on the route).  There is no SAG vehicle.

This is a 150k ride that begins in Azusa.  It finishes at the Congregation Ale House in Azusa for some post-ride food and beverage.  This year it will also be a celebration ride for all the volunteers who have helped PCH Randonneurs put on over 30 brevets and populaires this year.  All volunteers will receive a gift from the club at the post-ride celebration.

The route does a loop around pretty neighborhoods in the west San Gabriel Valley, then does an out-and-back to Long Beach on the San Gabriel River Trail.  There are many nice places to grab coffee or a snack in Long Beach or Seal Beach.  The course is fairly gentle, with only 2000 ft of climbing.

This populaire is the third ride of our Summer Rouleur Series.  To earn the Rouleur Award you need to do populaires with lengths of 100k, 125k, and 150k; plus a 200k brevet and a Dart populaire (we'll have a Dart in November).  If you do all these rides in the same year PCH Randonneurs will present you with this spiffy patch from RUSA:
